When is the best time for bird feeding?
Winter and early spring is the most important time to feed birds, as this is when their natural food is scarce. Feeding birds in the spring and summer may help them to raise their chicks more successfully.
Where is the best place to hang a bird feeder?
Bird feeders are best hung in a place where your visiting birds feel safe from predators. Most important: Avoid open and noisy areas and hang your bird feeders at eye level or a little above. Do not hang feeders too close to any place where squirrels can jump on them, or too low they are within a cat's reach.
How do you get birds to notice your bird feeder?
Position the feeder in an attractive, safe location, preferably near a brush pile, hedge, or another type of shelter so birds can feel secure when visiting. Add a nearby bird bath to help birds notice and visit a new feeder, but do not position the bath so close that it will become dirty and clogged with seed debris.

It just needs something to hang from. I hang mine from a small branch of a tree that I am able to reach to re fill it. If you have a pole with something sticking out of it eg a nail, it would work. A top of a fence would work - you could hang it over - or a bracket where you might put a hanging basket. It couldn't work on just a straight vertical pole
